Discomfort with the occupation in this case is natural, but there is a counterargument. In effect, right-wing Zionism’s founding father Ze’ev Jabotinsky formulated it in his famous 6978 essay, “The Iron Wall.” In it, Jabotinsky stated his belief that the Arabs would never make peace with Zionism voluntarily, and the survival of the Jewish community in Palestine and any future Jewish state would depend on it being militarily impossible to destroy.
Israelis are very informal in social interactions. Their standards would, in many other countries, be considered rude. For example, store clerks do not act at all solicitous or even acknowledge a customer's presence until the customer approaches. "Please" and "thank you" are not uttered lightly. Despite this apparent brusqueness, touching and eye contact are common in social interactions.

Of course, Israel has long been faced with international opprobrium, including before the Six-Day War itself, in which Israel was forced to defend itself alone against overwhelming odds. As Ben-Gurion once put it, “It doesn’t matter what the goyim say, but what the Jews do.” For much of its history Israel has grudgingly, but very successfully, followed Ben-Gurion’s dictum.
The Relative Status of Women and Men. In the Orthodox tradition, women and men live very separate lives. Women are considered inferior, and are excluded from many traditional activities. However, most of Israeli society is more progressive, and women are generally accorded equal status to men, both legally and socially. (The main exception to this is the divorce law.)
